BIRATNAGAR — Niraj Kumar Yadav was injured during an incident in Dewanganj Rural Municipality-1 of Sunsari on Saturday, September 19, and is undergoing treatment at Nobel Teaching Hospital in Biratnagar, according to police-linked reports. Two people have been detained as authorities continue investigating what happened.

An initial report published by Nepal News identified Yadav as 23 years old and said he had suffered a gunshot wound to his right thigh. The report, citing Deputy Superintendent of Police Chandra Bahadur Khadka, spokesperson for the District Police Office, Sunsari, said Yadav was stable and able to speak while receiving treatment.

That initial account said police had detained two suspects from Dewanganj Rural Municipality-2. It also reported that preliminary investigation pointed to possible personal enmity as a motive, although the investigation was still continuing.

However, subsequent information attributed to the District Police Office, Sunsari, differs on important details.

Saptakoshi Khabar, citing a police press release, reported that two groups clashed at around 5:25 p.m. at BP Chowk in Madhya Harshahi, Dewanganj-1. That account identified Yadav as 24 years old and said he suffered an injury to the rear or hip area of his body. Police said he was being treated at Nobel Hospital and described his condition as moderate.

The police-linked report also identified the two detained men as 18-year-old Bishnu Kumar Yadav of Dewanganj-2 and 26-year-old Jay Krishna Yadav, also known as “Lali,” from the same area. Police said they were investigating both men and searching for others who may have been involved.

Police also cautioned against circulating unverified claims about gunfire, deaths or injuries connected with the incident and asked media outlets to establish the facts before publication.

A later report by Sanchar Pati similarly said police had initially received information suggesting that Yadav had been shot, but that investigators were awaiting medical findings before confirming whether the wound was caused by a bullet. The report said Yadav himself and local residents had described the incident as a shooting.

Sanchar Pati reported that Yadav and a relative were returning from Harinagar market by motorcycle when they were allegedly stopped and assaulted near Laxmi Temple by a group of people. Local accounts said a shot was fired during the confrontation and that an injury resembling a bullet wound was visible near Yadav’s right hip. Police, however, said the medical report and continuing investigation would be needed to establish the cause of the injury.

The Himalayan Times separately reported on September 20 that Yadav had been injured in the thigh and that Bishnu Kumar Yadav and Jay Krishna Yadav had been detained. That report gave Yadav’s age as 19, adding another discrepancy to the available accounts.

Because credible reports currently give different ages for Yadav — 19, 23 and 24 — his age cannot be treated as independently confirmed. Likewise, although the earliest reports described the injury as a gunshot wound, subsequent police-linked reporting says authorities are still investigating whether gunfire was involved.
